After two full days of windsurfing, I gave Storm Evert a miss yesterday,
was tempted by another trip to Levington or even venturing further afield
to The Ray at Southend but just can’t face the travelling these days, the
regular rain showers also put me off! So, I was keen to have one last
session in July bringing it to 11 for the month but the forecast was for
the wind to drop during the morning and with low water at Levington at 11 I
wanted to get there fairly early so I could get out while the tide was
still quite high. I arrived at eight with plenty of water to launch from
our usual beach with the wind maybe west, sunny too with lovely flat water,
I find that the best water conditions are when there is less water in the
River Orwell, I prefer to sail with the tide coming in but had no choice
today and actually had no problems with the tide even when the wind dropped
light a couple of times! I rigged my 8.5 which proved ideal handling the
bigger gusts with ease. I set off at 8.30 wading the short distance to the
deep water in the marina entrance channel and was soon up and flying in
super flat water, getting better speeds in the lighter winds than the over
day when using my 6.5! It is also OK to gybe the big sail too, I am
improving slowing and actually got my best ever alpha today, not flying all
the way yet but getting a feel for it:) It was fantastic searching for a
gust to then whizz past the many yachts heading down to Felixstowe being
the only windsurfer too, just me and the Turns and Cormorant’s fishing in
the sunshine, shortie on enjoying the summer! The wind was on/off a bit but
once you got up and flying you could go for nice long mile runs with the
direction maybe WNW for most of the session. So, with the tide now low and
the wind dropping light I beat back sailing straight up the entrance
channel to one side not getting in the way of two yachts leaving landing
right by the entrance wall with no mud to contend with and got my kit
ashore with no problems, you can definitely foil here at low water as there
is plenty of water in the river and I didn’t get near to hitting the
bottom anywhere. So a bit of a bonus session, showered, packed up and home
just past 12 for lunch with Mag and next to no travelling involved so win
win:) Looks like that it might be a few light wind days before some more
wind later in the week, so time for the bikes again!
